Transform Camden High Street

The Stables Market is a wonderful place but further down Camden High Street there are any number of cheap shops selling tourist tat. I believe that we have to make this area one for the local people to enjoy and less of a tourist hub. This would also make the area safer and cleaner. More local businesses, less global chains, a wide range of shops and a general clean up.

Areas in south London are leaving Camden Town behind with their neighbourhood regeneration and lots of small, local businesses creating more character for each area. If Camden Town doesn't change and evolve I fear it will become yesterday's place to be. We must encourage young families, students and workers to make their lives here.

Why the contribution is important

I think this has been mostly explained above!

There are too many empty shops in Camden High Street. Is it possible for Camden council to encourage new and interesting businesses to move into the area? I feel sorry for those tourists who walk towards Mornington Crescent Tube with not one interesting shop to go into (unless of course you want to gamble or eat fried chicken). It strikes me that there is room a plenty on the high street for everything from chicken shops and chain stores to creative start ups and cultural hubs. We live in an incredibly diverse area but the High Street does not reflect that.

Pedestrianize Camden Lock to increase Tourist numbers but also to reduce congestion within the area. Diversion via the back of Camden town and enhanced use of Kentish Town road will ease the traffic as well as opening Hawley Road/Crescent

Kentish Town high street is finely balanced too - it is really important to find ways of supporting new local businesses. Would love to see more repair and reuse places. More popups.
